My name is Bridget Garrity and I am the founder of STEM Sisterhood.

This is me in an organic chemistry lab at California Institute of Technology (I’m the shorter one!)

STEM is an acronym which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Sisterhood is a word with many general definitions. According to Merriam-Webster it refers to “the solidarity of women based on shared conditions, experiences, or concerns”. Oxford University Press defines sisterhood as “the feeling of kinship with and closeness to a group of women or all women”. And, Dictionary.com describes it as a”congenial relationship or companionship among women; mutual female esteem, concern, support, etc.”

However, with apologies to Merriam-Webster, Oxford University Press, and Dictionary.com….to me STEM SISTERHOOD is:

A community of women who:
•Share a common passion or calling for the various disciplines in science, technology, engineering and math

•Who are committed to encouraging, supporting and challenging each other

•And who believe when one STEM Sister succeeds we all benefit collectively and change the world in powerful ways
STEM Sisterhood Has a 3-Part Mission:

AWARENESS: reach girls before they enter high school or early in high school with the message that STEM subjects are interesting and exciting
BELIEF: to help them believe they can pursue and succeed in many STEM fields
CONNECTION: build a sense of community (and a virtual connecting place) where girls and women can encourage, support and challenge each other
